Growing Dahlias

We believe healthy tubers (and vibrant blooms!) come from healthy soil.

Soil microbes—such as beneficial bacteria and fungi—play a vital role in nutrient cycling and root and tuber health. These microbes help plants access nutrients more efficiently, strengthen root and tuber systems, and support overall plant vigor.

We amend our soil with high-quality compost and use only organic fertilizer to increase organic matter, improve soil structure, and feed beneficial microbes. Compost supports long-term soil fertility and helps create a balanced growing environment for tubers.

We follow organic growing principles, but we are not certified organic. In the words of Joel Salatin we consider ourselves beyond organic.

According to the American Dahlia Society more than 80% of tubers have virus. We employ the following methods to limit virus on our farm:

  • All tools are rigorously disinfected between flower cutting, virus testing, digging, and tuber cutting using a 10% bleach solution, followed by a Dawn® detergent rinse.
  • We do not offer u-pick at our farm.
  • Our goal is to test each dahlia variety for TSV once every three years.
  • Each product page lists the most recent TSV test date with a negative result.
  • Plants showing symptoms of disease are promptly tested or culled.
  • Each dahlia variety and row is separated by companion plantings to attract beneficial insects and naturally control pests.
  • During the growing season, we apply compost tea to leaves and stems to strengthen plant structure and promote beneficial microbes, helping plants naturally resist pests and stress.
